Photographing school sports? Use a long zoom-lens. Set the camera to shutter priority or sport mode. Make sure the shutter speed is at least 1/250 sec - to freeze the action - and greater than the focal length of the lens. If, for example, your lens is 300mm then the shutter speed should be 1/300 or faster. A monopod is ideal to take the strain off your arms. When photographing a race, either stand beyond the finish line or position yourself to the side near the end of the track. The competitors will be heading towards you so set your camera to continuous shooting mode and be ready to catch the action. Don’t worry too much about framing as you can always crop the image later for maximum impact.
