Photographing sport? Use a long zoom-lens. Set the camera to shutter priority or sport mode. Make sure the shutter speed is at least 1/250 sec to freeze the action and greater than the focal length of the lens e.g. if your lens is 300mm then your shutter speed should be 1/300 or faster. A mono-pod is helpful to take the strain off your arms.
In the case of most games played on pitches, there will be a zone that gets the most use from attacking or defending players. Position yourself so that the players will be running towards you. Set your camera to continuous shooting mode and be ready to catch the action. Don’t worry too much about framing as you can always crop the image later for maximum impact.
